World Cup 2026 Group E Preview: Germany, Ivory Coast, Ecuador and Curacao

Group E brings together a rebuilding Germany, AFCON champions Ivory Coast, South American dark horses Ecuador, and debutants Curacao. This group is more open than it looks.

Germany are in transition — and that makes them vulnerable

Germany went out in the group stage at both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Let that sink in. A four-time world champion eliminated before the knockouts in back-to-back tournaments. The rebuild under Julian Nagelsmann showed signs of life at Euro 2024 on home soil, but this is a squad in transition.

The talent is still there. Musiala, Wirtz, Sane — the attacking options are elite. But the defensive questions remain and the psychological scars of recent tournament failures are real. The Germany 2026 kit is a clean Adidas design that goes back to basics. Whether the performances match the shirt is another question.

Ivory Coast — the AFCON champions are for real

Ivory Coast won the Africa Cup of Nations in dramatic fashion and arrive at the World Cup with genuine belief. This is not a team content with just being there. They have Premier League quality throughout the squad, pace to burn on the wings, and a defensive structure that frustrated the best teams in Africa.

They are the team Germany will least want to face in this group. The Ivory Coast kit in that iconic orange is one of the best-looking shirts at the tournament and their fans will create an atmosphere like no other in the stands.

Ecuador — South American dark horses

Ecuador qualified comfortably from the South American section and have quietly built a squad full of young, hungry players. They reached the group stage at the last two World Cups and there is a sense that 2026 could be the year they finally break through into the knockout rounds.

Their high-altitude home advantage during qualifying does not translate to the tournament itself, but the quality in the squad absolutely does. Physically strong, tactically disciplined, and dangerous on the counter. Do not sleep on Ecuador.

Curacao — the fairytale debutants

Curacao, a Caribbean island of around 150,000 people, are at their first ever World Cup. This is one of the great stories of the expanded 48-team format. They qualified through the CONCACAF pathway and every game they play at this tournament will be the biggest in their football history.

Realistically, getting out of a group with Germany, Ivory Coast and Ecuador would be a miracle. But just being here is an achievement that will inspire the next generation on the island. Every neutral will be cheering for them.

Prediction

1st: Ivory Coast. 2nd: Germany. Ecuador pushing hard for a third-place qualification spot.

This group is genuinely wide open. Germany topping it is not guaranteed. Check the full Group E page for fixtures, kick-off times and standings.
