How to run the sweepstake

1. Print this page — the team grid above prints cleanly to A4 with all 48 teams in a printable format. Cut along the dashed lines to make 48 individual team cards.

2. Set the entry fee — £5 per person is standard. £10 if your office is generous. Make sure everyone commits to paying before they draw.

3. Fold the cards and put them in a hat — or a bowl, or a tupperware container, or a printed envelope. Anything opaque works. Each participant pulls one card without looking.

4. Optional — run multiple draws for big offices. 48 teams covers a workplace of up to 48 people. For larger groups, split into 12 group-of-4 mini-sweepstakes (one per group A through L), or run two consecutive 24-team draws.

5. Pin the wall chart next to the kettle and update scores as the tournament progresses. The whole office now has a stake in every match.

Prize structures that work

Winner takes all (simple)

Whoever drew the World Cup champions takes the whole pot. Simple, dramatic, single point of suspense for six weeks.

Top three split (balanced)

60% to winner, 25% to runner-up, 15% to best third-placed semi-finalist. Spreads the wins. Less brutal for everyone whose team isn\u2019t in the final.

Top scorers + winners (fair)

Split: 50% to the World Cup winner, 25% to the highest-scoring team in the group stage, 25% to the best third-placed knockout team. Rewards early excitement as well as the final.
