The rivalry, in football culture
Brazil hosted the 1950 World Cup expecting to win it. The format of that tournament was a final group stage rather than a knockout final, which meant the deciding match against Uruguay was played in front of 200,000 fans at the Maracanã with Brazil needing only a draw to lift the trophy. Uruguay won 2-1 in the second half. The result is so famous in Brazil that the word 'Maracanazo' entered the Portuguese language as a synonym for 'historic catastrophe'.
