The rivalry, in football culture
The most famous fixture between them is the 1982 World Cup semi-final in Seville — generally regarded as one of the greatest and most controversial matches in tournament history. Both nations have World Cup titles in the modern era (West Germany in 1990, Germany in 2014, France in 1998 and 2018) and the rivalry between them represents Europe's two most consistent international teams of the past four decades.
Notable meetings
- 1982 World Cup semi-final — West Germany 3-3 France (a.e.t.), Germany won on penalties. The Schumacher-Battiston collision. Considered one of the most controversial World Cup matches ever played.
- 1986 World Cup semi-final — West Germany 2-0 France in Mexico, a rematch nobody wanted to see decided so quickly.
- 2014 World Cup quarter-final — Germany 1-0 France in Brazil. Mats Hummels' header sent the eventual champions through.
