The official 2026 FIFA World Cup match ball

Adidas have made every official World Cup match ball since 1970 — over 50 years of unbroken partnership. The 2026 ball is the latest in that lineage, following on from the Al Rihla (2022), Telstar 18 (2018), Brazuca (2014) and Jabulani (2010). It’s used in every match of the tournament, from the opening fixture in Mexico City to the final at MetLife Stadium.

A short history of World Cup match balls

1970 — Telstar. The original. The black-and-white panel pattern became the universal symbol of football for the next 50 years.

1986 — Azteca. The first synthetic match ball ever used at a World Cup. Hosted in Mexico, designed with Aztec mural references.

1998 — Tricolore. The first multi-coloured World Cup ball. Signalled Adidas’s shift towards bolder, brand-led match-ball design.

2010 — Jabulani. Famously polarising. Goalkeepers hated it, fans loved the look, and it’s still one of the most-collected World Cup balls of the modern era.

2014 — Brazuca. Six-panel design with bright, festive colours. Named through a Brazilian fan vote.

2018 — Telstar 18. Adidas paid tribute to the original 1970 Telstar. Embedded NFC chip for the first time.

2022 — Al Rihla. Translates as “the journey” in Arabic. Designed for fastest-ever in-flight ball speed.

2026 — the new edition. Continuing the lineage. Available now via the buying options above.
