The original solid gold World Cup trophy, made by French sculptor Abel Lafleur. Awarded permanently to Brazil after their third win in 1970. Famously stolen twice — once recovered by a dog named Pickles in 1966.
1974–present
Designed by Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga, standing 36.8 cm and weighing 6.175 kg of 18-carat gold. Two human figures hold up the Earth. Unlike the Jules Rimet, it cannot be won permanently.
The Pickles story. In March 1966, just four months before England were due to host the World Cup, the Jules Rimet trophy was stolen from a stamp exhibition in Westminster. A week later, a dog named Pickles found the trophy wrapped in newspaper under a hedge in south London. Pickles became a national hero and was invited to the England team’s post-tournament celebration dinner.
Why Brazil kept the original. Under original FIFA rules, any nation that won the World Cup three times would keep the Jules Rimet trophy permanently. Brazil achieved this in 1970 and took the trophy home. It was stolen again in 1983 in Rio de Janeiro and has never been recovered — widely believed to have been melted down.
The current trophy. Commissioned in 1974, the current FIFA World Cup trophy was designed by Silvio Gazzaniga and made in Milan. It’s 18-carat gold over a base of two layers of malachite semi-precious stone. Unlike the Jules Rimet, no nation can ever win it permanently. Since 2006, winners receive a gold-plated bronze replica.
