Kit timeline

A source-linked, decade-by-decade guide to Tottenham Hotspur’s shirt evolution, manufacturers, sponsors and notable designs.

1880s

1880s–1950s

1882–1960

Unbranded

Light blue and white in early years. Adopted white shirts, navy shorts in 1898 — the Preston North End tribute. Cockerel crest from 1921.

Tottenham's founding decade was one of colour experimentation — navy and light blue halves, chocolate brown and gold halves. The decisive switch to white shirts and navy shorts in 1898 was an explicit tribute to then-dominant Preston.

1960–1970

Umbro

Bill Nicholson double-winning team. Clean white shirts, navy shorts, cockerel crest stitched onto the left breast. V-neck collar.

Spurs's 1960-61 Double — the first league-and-FA-Cup double of the 20th century — was achieved in a clean white Umbro shirt with navy shorts. Blanchflower, Greaves and White defined the era.

1970–1981

Umbro → Admiral (1977) → Le Coq Sportif (1980)

Admiral experimented with tramlines and elaborate trim. Le Coq Sportif arrived in 1980 and produced the sponsor-free 1981 FA Cup-winning kit.

The sponsor-free 1981 FA Cup final kit, worn by players including Ardiles and Hoddle, is the defining shirt of this period. Spurs won the replay 3-2.

1981–2000

Le Coq Sportif → Hummel (1985) → Umbro (1991) → Pony (1995) → adidas (1999)

Holsten first appeared in 1983. Hummel chevrons defined the later 1980s; the 1991 FA Cup-winning Umbro home used navy-and-white shadow striping.

Spurs changed manufacturer several times across these two decades. The 1991 FA Cup home, worn during Gascoigne's tournament before his cruciate injury, and the 1992-93 Umbro home are strong collector reference points.

2000–2015

Adidas → Kappa (2002) → Puma (2006) → Under Armour (2012)

Thomson (2002-06), Mansion (2006-10), Autonomy (2010-11), Aurasma (2011-13) and HP (2013-14) marked successive front-of-shirt eras.

Juande Ramos's 2008 League Cup-winning kit (Puma) and the Harry Redknapp top-4 finishes were in clean Puma blues and whites. Bale's left-foot era began in Under Armour in 2012.

Under Armour → Nike (2017)

Nike arrived in 2017 with AIA on the front. The 2018-19 Champions League-final home is a defining modern reference.

The 2019 Champions League-final home and the shirts from Harry Kane's final seasons are clear identities from Nike's tenure. Kane's departure in 2023 closed one player era while the Nike partnership continued.

Collector decision

Original, official reissue or modern remake?

A search result can mix period originals, later official reissues, unlicensed remakes and counterfeit listings. Match the exact season, variant, maker label and sponsor treatment; then check condition, measurements, seller evidence and the returns policy before paying. Vintage sizing can differ from today’s chart, and old namesets or patches need their own provenance check.
