Manchester United Kit History — Iconic Shirt Eras Since 1878

Newton Heath LYR used several early colour combinations, with green and gold later becoming a supporter protest symbol. This archive follows seven defining Manchester United shirt eras without reducing that early record to one settled origin kit.

Founded by railway workers, Newton Heath used several early colour combinations before the 1902 rebrand to Manchester United. Red then became the club's durable home-shirt identity, with details and change colours varying across seasons.

Matt Busby rebuilt United into a European force in the 1950s. The Munich air disaster in 1958 devastated the squad in the famous Busby Babes era — the kits worn that season remain among the most emotionally loaded in football kit history.

United won the 1968 European Cup final in a blue Umbro change shirt at Wembley. The red home remained the domestic identity, while rugby-style collars, the club crest and restrained branding characterised much of the wider period.

Admiral gave way to adidas in 1980. Sharp sponsorship began in 1982 and continued into the 2000s.

Sharp arrived on United shirts in 1982 and became inseparable from the club's 1980s and 1990s visual identity. The 1983-84 and 1985-86 FA Cup-era shirts remain strong collector references.

Alex Ferguson's first trophy as United boss (1990 FA Cup) started a decade of sustained success. Defining identities include the 1990-92 adidas snowflake away, the 1993-95 black away associated with Cantona, the grey away changed at half-time at Southampton in 1996, and the 1998-99 Treble-winning Umbro home with Sharp sponsorship.

Nike supplied the kit from 2002-2015. Vodafone (2000-2006), AIG (2006-2010), Aon (2010-2014), then Chevrolet (from 2014) appeared on the front.

Nike's 2002 arrival opened a long run spanning the Ronaldo-Rooney-Tevez years. The 2007-08 Champions League home is one of the clearest modern reference shirts from that period.

Adidas return with the three-stripe shoulder reintroduced. Chevrolet (to 2021), then TeamViewer (2021-2024), then Snapdragon (from 2024).

Adidas's return brought the three stripes back to United shirts. The current era mixes heritage references with changing sponsor treatments, so each season and version still needs to be identified separately.

Frequently asked questions

Who makes Manchester United kits in 2026?

Adidas returned as Manchester United's kit manufacturer in 2015-16 and continues to make the current 2026-27 range.

Why do some Man United fans wear green and gold?

Green and gold are associated with Newton Heath LYR, the club that became Manchester United in 1902, although the surviving early kit record contains several combinations. Supporters revived the colours during protests against the Glazer ownership from 2010 onwards.

What was Manchester United's first ever kit?

Newton Heath's early kit record is more varied than the familiar green-and-gold shorthand suggests. Surviving archive records show several combinations before the 1902 Manchester United name and the long-term move toward red shirts.

What is the most iconic Manchester United kit?

FKB’s archive pick is the 1998-99 Umbro treble-winning home with the Sharp sponsor. Other defining identities include the blue 1968 European Cup-final shirt, the 1990-92 adidas snowflake away and the Cantona-era 1993-95 black away.

Original, official reissue or modern remake?

A search result can mix period originals, later official reissues, unlicensed remakes and counterfeit listings. Match the exact season, variant, maker label and sponsor treatment; then check condition, measurements, seller evidence and the returns policy before paying. Vintage sizing can differ from today’s chart, and old namesets or patches need their own provenance check.
